Plenty of plants, such as the mosses, can reproduce without a partner. The flowers on fruit trees must be pollinated to evolve into fruits, though, so do you need male and female fruit trees for cross-pollination? Since so many varieties of trees exist, there is no one answer to this question. Generally, it's best to have two trees of the same kind for the best fruit yield, because having two trees helps with cross-pollination.
