Arsenic is used in herbicides and pesticides, but back in the 19th century, it was the poisoner's method of choice. In fact, it was used so often and so many people got away with it that it's been called a "near-perfect murder weapon." While most doctors today would recognize an acute case of arsenic poisoning — symptoms include vomiting, diarrhea, and of course, eventual death — long-term exposure to small amounts of arsenic has much more subtle effects.
